Dickinson County Release Meaning
A Dickinson County release means that one custodian stopped holding the person. It does not answer every later question. Someone may post bond, finish a county sentence, receive a dismissal or court order, leave prison on parole, reach a maximum discharge date, or move under a detainer. A detainer is a request or legal basis for another agency to take custody. Transfer to the Michigan Department of Corrections, another jail, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the U.S. Marshals Service, or immigration custody ends the first stay but does not place the person in the community.
The source controls the meaning. Dickinson County Correctional Center holds the operational booking and departure facts for its jail. The court supplies the bond, dismissal, judgment, sentence, or other authority. MI-VINE can report a custody event from a participating agency. Michigan OTIS shows state prison and community-supervision status. A formal jail release form, certified court order, MDOC discharge certificate, or Parole Board discharge order is stronger proof than a name disappearing from a search.
Dickinson County Release Routes
The route out of Dickinson County custody determines the next useful record. Bond or a court-ordered release may return a person to the community while the case continues. Time served means the court credited enough time to satisfy the jail term. Parole releases a state prisoner into MDOC supervision. Probation is court-ordered community supervision and does not by itself show a prior prison stay. Discharge ends the relevant sentence or supervision. These terms should not be treated as synonyms.
A transfer is especially easy to misread. Dickinson County can record a departure while a receiving agency records a new admission. Matching both records gives a more complete result than either one alone.
| Release route | What it means | Where to confirm next |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or court order | County jail custody ends under court authority | Jail release record and 95B District or 41st Circuit case |
| Time served | A county sentence is satisfied with credited time | Judgment, sentence-credit entry, and actual jail departure |
| Parole | Prison custody ends, but MDOC supervision continues | OTIS status, parole order, and field office |
| Discharge | The named sentence or supervision has ended | MDOC certificate/order or court discharge order |
| Transfer or detainer | One agency releases the person to another custodian | Departure record plus the receiving system |
| Dismissal | The court ends or removes a charge, subject to the case record | Court disposition and jail departure time |
Dickinson County Release Record Fields
A useful Dickinson County release record answers who left, when the person left, why custody ended, and where the person went. Those facts can sit in more than one file. Identity details guard against namesakes. The actual date and time distinguish a completed departure from a projected date. The releasing authority connects the jail action to a bond, dismissal, sentence, parole order, or detainer. Destination identifies community release or movement to another agency.
The county FOIA request should ask for existing documents by name and date range. It should not demand a new explanation. The inventory below consists of sound request terms from the local research, not a claim that every field appears on one Dickinson County form or that every item must be disclosed.
- Full name, aliases, and date of birth
- The identity tied to the custody record.
- Booking or control number
- The jail event connected to the person.
- Admission date and time
- When the Dickinson County stay began.
- Actual release date and time
- When physical custody ended, not when release was forecast.
- Release type or reason
- Bond, time served, dismissal, court order, transfer, or another recorded basis.
- Releasing authority
- The court, jail, Parole Board, or legal process behind the change.
- Destination or receiving agency
- Community release versus transfer into another system.
- Case and charge references
- The court matter linked to the booking and release.
- Property acknowledgment
- A record, if kept, tied to the return or handling of property.
Request Dickinson County Release Records
The Dickinson County FOIA form is the documentary route when a phone answer or locator result is not enough. Address it to the county FOIA coordinator as the form directs and identify Sheriff or jail records. Give the full name, known aliases, date of birth if known, and a narrow custody date range. Ask for the booking card, release log or inmate release form, actual release date and time, release reason, authority, transfer destination, related case or booking number, and only other existing records needed for the question.
Michigan FOIA, MCL 15.235, generally calls for a response within five business days. The county may grant, deny, partly grant, or issue one extension of no more than ten business days. A response deadline is not a promise that copies arrive that day. Fees under MCL 15.234 are limited to authorized incremental categories and must follow the public body’s procedures. No special flat Dickinson release-record fee or public records-unit hours were found, so call before planning an in-person visit.
- Identify one person and a focused date range. Add a booking or case number if known.
- Name the existing jail documents sought. If actual departure is the only issue, request the release form or log entry instead of the whole file.
- Ask for the actual time, release basis, and receiving agency. This separates community release from transfer.
- Submit the current county form to the FOIA coordinator and keep a copy of the wording and date.
- Review any denial or redaction reason. Ask for reasonably separable, nonexempt portions when part of a record is withheld.

Main: 906-774-6262
Active-investigation, security, victim, juvenile, sealed, and other protected material can be withheld or redacted. Michigan FOIA requires access to existing nonexempt records; it does not require the county to write a narrative, answer a question, or calculate a release date.
Note: Narrow requests reduce namesake risk and search cost while keeping the actual Dickinson County release event at the center.
Dickinson Release Retention and Set-Asides
Removal from a live portal is not the same as destruction. Michigan DTMB General Schedule 11 places booking cards, mugshots, court papers, prison-transfer papers, and inmate release forms within a jail inmate jacket. Its general minimum is release plus ten years. An approved agency-specific schedule can supersede that schedule, and retention does not decide whether each item is public. It does explain why a precise Dickinson County records request may find a release document after no online result remains.
Online systems have their own limits. OTIS retains discharged people for only three years after discharge from supervision and removes qualifying records after set-aside or expungement. Some MiCOURT participating courts use a seven-year criminal-sentence filter. VINELink does not promise a permanent archive. A set-aside changes ordinary public display while restricted official records may remain for uses authorized by law. Thus an absent search result proves little by itself.
- Release
- Physical custody ends in the reporting system, though a case or supervision may continue.
- Discharge
- A sentence or supervision relationship formally ends.
- Detainer
- Another agency’s basis to receive or continue custody.
- Set-aside
- A Michigan process that removes an eligible conviction from ordinary public display under statutory rules.
Dickinson County Jail Use Context
Local jail counts provide context, but they do not equal release totals. The Daily News year-end jail report attributed an average daily population of 55.5 in 2025 to the sheriff, compared with 44.6 in 2024. Reported historical averages were 74 in 2019 and 74.4 in 2018. Each figure describes occupied beds on an average day. None measures annual bookings, completed releases, or average length of stay.
The report also listed 309 sheriff arrests in 2025. An arrest is not necessarily a completed Dickinson County booking, and other agencies may place people in the jail. The figure must not be relabeled as a release count. A person-specific release still requires the jail record, court authority, and any receiving-system record.
Dickinson Release Fees in Context
The same local report described $378,818 in offender fees charged and $97,172 collected during 2025. It reported $233,264 charged and $67,639 collected in 2024. Those are broad system figures. The source did not itemize every type of fee, identify a release charge, or establish what any named Dickinson County released person owed after departure.
Do not apply those totals to an individual record. A request for copies may generate a separate FOIA estimate under Michigan law, based on permitted labor, duplication, and mailing categories. The sheriff page does not publish a flat release-record or photo fee. Requesters should wait for the county’s itemized response instead of assuming the year-end offender-fee totals predict a records charge.
Find Dickinson County Released Inmates
Start with the last known custodian. Dickinson County jail-only custody begins with the jail line, MI-VINE, and the local case. A Michigan prison sentence or MDOC supervision calls for OTIS. Federal custody must be split between U.S. Marshals pretrial control and BOP sentenced custody. A possible immigration detainer calls for ICE only after checking the criminal agency that released or transferred the person.
No official Dickinson County web roster, recent-release archive, 24-hour list, or 72-hour list was found. The sheriff page supplies contact and jail facts, not person-level release data. The Dickinson County releases from the last 24 hours route therefore begins with official fallback channels rather than an invented feed.
Dickinson County also has an official iOS sheriff app, but its store listing advertises alerts, tips, offices, services, events, and news. It does not advertise an inmate search, recent-release list, jail roster, or booking-photo function. The app can serve as a public-safety and office-directory channel, not as proof that a named person left custody.
- Search MiCOURT and select the correct person, court, and case. Use 95B District for misdemeanors and early felony or bond events; use 41st Circuit for felony disposition and sentence.
- Call the jail at 906-774-6270. Ask if the person remains held, when the person left, the release type, and whether a transfer occurred.
- Search MI-VINE for the matching reporting agency and event. Treat an alert as notice to verify, not a permanent discharge record.
- Use OTIS when MDOC custody or supervision is involved. Read status before interpreting any date.
- Continue to BOP, the federal docket, ICE, another county, or the named receiving agency if the Dickinson record shows transfer.
- File a focused county FOIA request when formal proof or a historical record is needed.
Each step answers a distinct part of the question. The best finding joins the departure date, legal authority, and destination. It does not turn the absence of a name into proof.
Dickinson County Court Release Trail
Dickinson County’s court split creates a clear but two-part route. The 95B District Court handles misdemeanors and the district stage of felonies, including preliminary and bond events. The 41st Circuit Court handles felony dispositions and sentences. Both courtrooms are at 705 South Stephenson Street in Iron Mountain. A release reason can therefore appear in district, circuit, and jail records, depending on the charge and stage.
Search the MiCOURT Case Search by party, then inspect the court, case number, bond or order events, disposition, judgment and sentence, sentence credit, probation, dismissal, and later discharge or set-aside orders. MiCOURT says its online content is informational and incomplete. A certified record comes from the clerk. The court order may authorize release before jail processing is complete, so pair it with the actual departure record.
The official MiCOURT interface below illustrates the correct court-record starting point. It is not a jail roster.

The court result can explain legal authority, while the Dickinson County jail still supplies the actual release or transfer time.
Dickinson Released Inmates in OTIS
The Michigan Department of Corrections OTIS explanation and entry page covers current and former MDOC prisoners, parolees, probationers, interstate-compact cases, escapees, and absconders. It is not a full Michigan jail database. Someone whose only sentence was served at Dickinson County Correctional Center may never appear. When an MDOC record exists, prefer the MDOC number, validate identity and sentencing county, then read status and location before sentence dates.
“Prisoner” indicates current MDOC confinement. “Parole” means prison custody ended while community supervision continues. “Probation” describes court supervision and does not by itself prove prison time. “Discharged” means the MDOC relationship ended. Earliest Release Date is a parole-eligibility date, not a promise of departure. Maximum Discharge Date is a potential sentence endpoint subject to lawful recalculation. Multiple sentence blocks may have different dates.
| OTIS search field or result | How to use it |
|---|---|
| MDOC number | Best route to one state record when known |
| Name and narrowing details | Compare age, sex, race, marks, aliases, and physical description |
| Sentencing county and court | Confirm that the record matches the Dickinson-related case |
| Status and location | Read these before deciding whether the person is confined, supervised, or discharged |
| Earliest Release Date | Eligibility, not an actual release date |
| Maximum Discharge Date | Potential endpoint, not a substitute for current status |
| Date paroled or discharge data | Corroborate with MDOC, court, field office, or formal instrument |

A matching profile should be checked against the court and, when local supervision appears, the Dickinson County field office. The Dickinson County parole and probation record route explains that local verification step.
Dickinson County Release Alerts
MI-VINE provides free, confidential custody and case information by web or phone. Michigan access includes VINELink and 800-770-7657, with TTY 866-847-1298 listed in the official brochure. People can search a specific person and register for release, transfer, escape, and relevant case events. County-jail coverage is tied to participating agencies, so no result should be followed by a call to the jail or MDOC.
A MI-VINE event is system-relative. Release from a reporting jail may be followed at once by another agency’s custody. Transfer is a separate event. Registration can use phone, email, or text. Telephone notices use a four-digit PIN and `#` to acknowledge the call. Email and text do not use the telephone PIN. The alert is a prompt to check the jail, court, OTIS, or receiving system, not a permanent certified discharge record.
The Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry is a separate and narrow channel. It covers people required to register and can show registry status, not the precise time a jail or prison released someone. “Active” differs from “Incarcerated,” but neither replaces a Dickinson County release form. General VINE alerts and the added MDOC Crime Victim Notification Unit process for eligible notices should also not be merged into one promise.
Note: Confirm the reporting agency on every alert, then look for any receiving custodian before describing a Dickinson release as community return.
Dickinson Release Across Custody Systems
“Released” has a different boundary in each system serving Dickinson County. MI-VINE confirms an event from the reporting custodian. OTIS parole confirms departure from a Michigan prison while MDOC supervision continues. The BOP Inmate Locator may show “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody,” yet BOP warns that another agency may still hold the person. ICE’s locator can include people released from ICE custody only within the prior 60 days.
Federal pretrial custody needs another route. The U.S. Marshals Service may place a federal detainee in a state, local, or private contract facility. There is no public historical USMS person locator equivalent to BOP’s tool. Use the federal docket and the facility that actually holds the person. BOP becomes the right locator after commitment to federal sentenced custody. If an ICE detainer may follow a criminal release, search the official ICE locator and contact the appropriate field office when its guidance directs.
Dickinson jail departure: establishes exit from county custody, but not whether another agency received the person.
OTIS parole: establishes that prison custody ended while MDOC supervision continues, not final discharge from MDOC.
BOP released or not in custody: establishes that BOP no longer holds the person, not freedom from every other custodian.
ICE recent released result: establishes recent exit from ICE custody, not earlier history outside the locator window.
MI-VINE event: establishes that a reporting agency recorded a change, not a certified permanent release instrument.
Dickinson Released Custody Comparison
A current-custody result and a release record answer opposite questions. Dickinson County publishes no official online jail roster, so live county status comes first from the jail line and MI-VINE when the agency participates. Past county departure comes from the booking and release records or court-linked documents. OTIS applies only when MDOC jurisdiction exists. Federal and immigration systems each have their own scope.
Question: What if every online search is blank? A blank screen is not a release finding. Call the last known custodian, inspect the correct court case, and request the retained record. Then continue in any receiving system named by the jail or court.
| Question | Primary Dickinson route | Best proof |
|---|---|---|
| Still in county jail? | Jail line and MI-VINE | Direct jail confirmation |
| When did county custody end? | County FOIA request | Release form or log entry |
| Why did release occur? | 95B District or 41st Circuit record | Order, judgment, or disposition |
| Transferred to MDOC? | OTIS | Receiving status plus county departure |
| Released from state prison? | OTIS and MDOC | Parole order or discharge instrument |
| Federal or ICE release? | BOP, federal docket, actual facility, or ICE | Record from the responsible federal custodian |
Dickinson Jail Release Setting
The official Dickinson County Sheriff page says the county jail was remodeled and expanded in spring 1997. The Dickinson County Correctional Center now has 71 beds for men and women. No separate municipal lockup, state prison, federal prison, or ICE detention center was identified inside Dickinson County in the reviewed official sources.
That local footprint makes the serving systems important. A Dickinson departure may lead to an MDOC prison elsewhere in Michigan, a federal contract arrangement, another county, or immigration custody. The jail page does not publish a release door, processing time, weekend procedure, waiting area, property-pickup rule, transport plan, local bond schedule, or county release-date calculator. Ask the jail rather than importing a practice from another county.
The sheriff source shown below confirms the local jail identity and contact route used for Dickinson County released inmates.

Its lack of a person-level roster or release feed is why phone, FOIA, court, and receiving-system checks form the county’s real search path.
Dickinson County Release Facilities
Only the Dickinson County Correctional Center is a documented local detention facility in the reviewed sources. The other entries are serving custody systems that may receive someone after the county jail or hold a Dickinson County case elsewhere. Each must be searched according to its own records and legal role.
A county release record should say whether a person returned to the community or moved to a receiving agency. The receiving record then confirms what happened next. That two-record method is more reliable than forcing every case through one locator.
